Executive Director Sarah Whitcher Kansa is cofounder and Executive Director of the Alexandria Archive Institute. She comes to this position after serving as Assistant Director and Chief Financial Officer of the AAI from 2001-2007. Sarah is also a practicing zooarchaeologist, working primarily for the Late Neolithic site of Domuztepe, south central Turkey. She received her BA (Honors) in Anthropological Archaeology from the University of California, San Diego in 1993 and her PhD in Near East and East Mediterranean Archaeology from the University of Edinburgh in 2000. Her research explores the relationship between developments in social complexity and animal exploitation. Sarah has extensive experience in Near Eastern faunal analysis, current zooarchaeological methods, and analysis of human remains, having researched prehistoric sites in the Levant and Turkey in periods spanning the Natufian through the Nabatean. As Executive Director of the AAI (since 2007), Sarah works with her peers in the archaeological and museum communities to encourage open access frameworks for sharing cultural heritage content. Her current promotional efforts focus on Open Context, an online data sharing system for publishing, searching, exploring, and analyzing diverse research content, developed by the AAI with funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
