Calendar of Events—2007 Meetings

MARCH 23–24, 2007
The 24th annual Visiting Scholar Conference, entitled “The Archaeology of Anthropogenic Environments,” will be held at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA. The conference, sponsored by the Center for Archaeological Investigations, will consider the archaeological evidence for human manipulation of the environment, both as a context for modern environments and as a source of data about past societies. Abstracts are due by November 27, 2006. For more information, contact Rebecca Dean, E-mail: rdean@siu.edu, Tel: (618) 453-5032, Web: http://www.siu.edu/~cai/vsconference2007.html.

MARCH 29 – APRIL 1, 2007
The 17th annual Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference (TRAC) in conjunction with the 7th Roman Archaeology conference, hosted by the University College London and Birkbeck College, will be held at the University of London, England. Richard Thomas, University of Leicester, is organizing a session entitled “Feeding the Roman Army: The Archaeology of Supply Chains and Provisioning Networks” in which presenters will consider new archaeological evidence for how the Roman army was provided with an adequate supply of food. If you are interested in participating in this session, please e-mail Richard at rmt12@leicester.ac.uk. For general information about the TRAC conference, please visit the organization’s website at http://www.romansociety.org/trac.htm.

MAY 20 – 27, 2007
The next World Archaeology Congress (WAC) Inter-Congress conference, organized around the theme “Archaeology of the Environment and Cultural Landscapes,” will be held in Kingston, Jamaica. ICAZ President László Bartosiewicz is organizing a session entitled “Scales and Feathers: An Environmental/Cultural Perspective” in which presenters will demonstrate the many ways animal remains can contribute to archaeology beyond the proverbial “laundry lists” of which species are present in an assemblage. Discussions between archaeologists, historians, and archaeozoologists need to be fostered in this global arena. If you are interested in participating in this session, please e-mail László at H10459bar@helka.iif.hu. For general information about the WAC Inter-Congress conference, please visit the Archaeological Society of Jamaica’s website at http://www.asjam.com.

SEPTEMBER 6-8, 2007
The 3rd ICAZ Animal Palaeopathology Working Group meeting, entitled “Recording Strategies and Analytical Methods in Animal Palaeopathology: Practices, Possibilities and Problems” will be held at the Department of Anatomy and Physiology, Lithuanian Veterinary Academy, Kaunas, Lithuania. Animal disease can have a profound effect on society, however the study of animal disease has been limited by poor data collection practices and a lack of interest in methodological development. This conference addresses this problem by bringing together zooarchaeologists, human osteologists, and veterinarians from around the world to discuss the theory and practice of recording and reporting incidences of animal palaeopathology. We encourage participants to discuss the application of existing methods, the development of new methodologies and techniques, and/or highlight the potential of future developments. For additional information, contact Richard Thomas, University of Leicester, E-mail: rmt12@le.ac.uk or Linas Daugnora, Lithuanian Veterinary Academy, E-mail: daugnora@lva.lt.
