What is Archaeozoology

What Topics Do Archaeozoologists Study?

Archaeozoologists ask a wide range of questions about human/animal relationships in the past. Some of these questions focus on the biological or environmental aspects of this relationship, others on the social impact of human/animal interactions.

Common topics that archaeozoologists study include:

  • Paleo-environments and environmental change
  • Hunters and their prey
  • Origins of animal domestication
  • Development of animal breeds
  • Animals in the economic, social, and belief systems of ancient societies
  • Formation of archaeological sites and associated archaeofaunal assemblages
