Urartian sites on the territory of Armenia: bone remains and representations of animals (Lilit Mirzoyan)

Description

Excavations of the Urartian sites on the territory of Armenia were started in the early fifties and revealing great cultural heritage left behind by the inhabitants of these sites. While most of the material finds were well analyzed and results were soon published, animals bone remains stayed without particular attention for many years. With the restarted excavations of the Erebuni site at the end of nineties the necessity of analysis of animal bone remains became evident for this site, eventually demanding study and comparison with the bone material from other Urartian sites. In this stage of my work I have finished the research of the bone remains from Erebuni and Karmir blur sites and obtained interesting results which will be shown in my presentation. In order to estimate the greatest role which animals played in the Urartian society, the review of animal representations on different material finds (from the zooarchaeological point of view) is in the process. Some results of this interesting work will also be presented.
